God is Holy (Part 2)

John 1:12 “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.

The second part of our Family Devotionals on God’s Holiness is very crucial. It is crucial because we will be introducing to our children the Good News – The Gospel. This is the foundation that will change their lives from now until eternity. This will be the foundation as they make the most important decision in their lives. It is not the decision of what course to take in college, what career to pursue, or whom they should marry but the most important decision they will make is whether or not they will choose Jesus over sin, choose Jesus over the world, and choose Jesus over themselves. It is believing and accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. It is having a relationship with the One who gave His life for them that they be made worthy before a Holy God. It is making a heartfelt decision of having a relationship with Jesus Christ.

So I encourage parents that before you teach this to your kids – be prayed up. Fast if you must. They may not accept Christ during your devotionals but have faith that that seed you have planted will grow by the grace and empowering of the Holy Spirit.

After a word of prayer, we discussed where sin began – the fall of Adam and Eve.

In the beginning, God made the world and everything in it. He made light and water, the clouds and the sky, the plants and the trees, and every animal there ever was. He also made the sun, moon and stars. The last thing God made was a man and a woman, Adam and Eve.
God loved all of the things He had made. He especially loved spending time with Adam and Eve. In the evening, He would walk with them and talk about their day. They had nothing to hide from one another because God, being perfect, had made Adam and Eve perfect.
But one day, something dreadful happened. Adam and Eve disobeyed the one thing God had told them not to do. It was the first sin, ever, in the entire world.
That night, when God came to walk with Adam and Eve, they were hiding from Him. They were sad, afraid, and ashamed because of what they had done. God was sad, too. As a consequence, God could not spend time with Adam and Eve anymore. He banished them from the perfect home He had made for them and they had to work harder for the things they needed.

Adapted from Genesis 1-3.

We discussed to them that we were meant to be friends with God like Adam and Eve (he walked with God). However, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God sin entered the world. God cannot accept sin because He is Holy. Sin separates man from God.

Sin has consequences. It’s consequence is death. As the Bible says in Romans 6:23 “for the wages of sin is death…”

We have such a serious and a big sin problem!

At this time, we can ask them if they want to have the same relationship that Adam and Eve had before the fall. Let’s hope they would answer yes.

The good news is that God still wants that same relationship with us. So God made a way for us. He fixed our sin problem through His Son Jesus Christ.

For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son (Jesus), so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (NLT).

At this time, we took out the three glasses (see part on Materials).

God is Holy Part 2

While discussing our sin problem, we asked them to pour some of “SIN” to “YOU & I”. Because of sin in our lives, we cannot have that friendship with God who is Holy.

For the Wages of Sin is Death

So God sent His Only Son Jesus Christ, who is the perfect sacrifice for us. At this time, pour some of “SIN” to “JESUS”. While pouring “SIN” to “JESUS”, the stain of sin will not affect “JESUS”. “JESUS” remains as clear water. With that illustration, tell them that there is NO SIN in Jesus Christ. Jesus is not capable of sin because He is perfect and Holy. That is reason why He is the perfect sacrifice.

Jesus Christ the Perfect Sacrifice

God made a way for you and me to be pure that we may have a relationship with Him. It is only through Jesus Christ because He died for our sins on the cross. He took the blame. If we repent from all our sins and make Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior then what God sees is no longer our sin but Jesus Christ’s pureness. While discussing, pour “JESUS” to “YOU & I”. At this time, they will notice that our dirty water becomes clean and pure.

What can wash away our sin?

Jesus Christ took not only our sins but for the whole world’s sin. He can wash away all the sin of the world. This time, you can ask one of your child to pour “JESUS” to “SIN”. “SIN” will no longer be dark colored but pure and clean.

God so loved the World that He gave his only son

What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

O precious is the flow that makes me white as snow. No other fount I know. Nothing but the blood of Jesus

This would be the perfect time then to make the invitation. Put out those gift boxes you have prepared and let them hold it. Don’t let them open it yet.

Salvation is a free gift. Like any other gift given to us, it wouldn’t be ours until we receive and accept it.

Now let them open the gift. Inside the gift is the word JESUS.

But to all who beleived Him

This is God’s gift for you – Jesus. He is the best and most precious gift you will ever receive.

Make that invitation. Do you want to accept Jesus to make Him the Lord and Savior of your life?

Lead them to prayer. Repent of all our sin. Ask Jesus to be the Lord and Savior in our hearts. Ask God to let you live your life for Him. Thank Him for sending His Son.

To help them remember our family devotional, we asked them to color the cross and display it on the wall of their bedrooms.

Christ died for you

If you plan to use this devotional for your kids, it is my prayer that God would use this to plant the seed of the Gospel in their hearts. Have faith for it is the Holy Spirit who causes it to grow and bear fruit. 🙏
